Across Canada, countless anti-bullying initiatives have been introduced in minor hockey. A quick search finds links to anti-bullying/anti-racism/maltreatment awareness spotlights that are one day, short term or defunct. While each has played a role in raising awareness, many of these programs are now outdated, often relying on one-time education sessions or generic policies that fail to address the deeper, ongoing challenges of psychological safety.
For example:
Zero Tolerance Policies: These tend to be punitive and reactive, focusing more on discipline than prevention or meaningful culture change.
Awareness Days/Events: Valuable for visibility, but lack sustained engagement or follow-up.
One-Time Training Modules: Often checkbox exercises that don't create lasting behavioral shifts.
The reality? Research consistently shows that bullying and maltreatment are systemic issues, closely linked to leadership, policy, and governance—especially within the unique culture of sport. Interventions must be driven by psychological and sociological insights, using data-informed approaches. A static policy or annual event cannot dismantle harmful norms or build safer environments for kids. Sustainable change requires integrated strategies, with youth voice solutions at the core.
This is where Puck Off to Bullying makes a difference. We are committed to:
Continuous research integration to keep strategies current and evidence-based.
Ongoing education and leadership training—not just for players, but also parents, coaches, and boards.
A focus on psychological safety, that keeps minor children and youth voice at the center of everything we do.
If we want true change, we need more than slogans—we need action rooted in psychology, governance, and accountability. That being said... looking at a serious issue from the lighter side...we might not be able to stop bullying, but we can sure tell it to "Get the Puck Outta Here!"
